Honda CR-V coolant flush:$120 to $180at most shops, 2026

The CR-V is the best-selling compact SUV in the US and shares its cooling system architecture with the Civic. Same Type 2 blue PHOAT, same intervals, slightly more fluid. The hybrid trim adds an inverter cooling circuit that bumps the dealer flush price.

DIY notes

Why a CR-V flush is straightforward at home

The CR-V's engine bay is more spacious than the Civic's, which makes the cooling system easier to work on. The radiator filler neck is well-positioned for funnel-based refill, the upper radiator hose is right at the top of the radiator (perfect for air-bleed), and the radiator drain petcock is accessible from underneath with a basic socket and a 5-gallon drain pan.

On the AWD versions, a small lower undertray covers part of the radiator drain area. Six clips and four bolts and the tray comes off. Remove it before you start; trying to reach the petcock around the tray is frustrating and leaks coolant onto the tray itself.

The 1.5L turbo CR-V is the most DIY-friendly. Refill 50/50 Type 2 through the radiator neck, heater on full, idle until the thermostat opens (about 8 to 12 minutes), top off as air purges, cap when level stabilises. The maintenance minder will reset itself once the new coolant has been through enough drive cycles.

The CR-V Hybrid is a different story. The engine-coolant procedure is similar to the standard CR-V, but the inverter cooling has its own reservoir, bleeder, and circulation pump that needs to be commanded on by a scan tool to bleed properly. Home DIY on the hybrid engine side is reasonable; the inverter side should go to the dealer at the dealer-recommended interval.

Common questions

Honda CR-V coolant flush FAQ

How much does a Honda CR-V coolant flush cost in 2026?

+

A Honda CR-V coolant flush costs $120 to $180 at most independent shops in 2026. The CR-V's 2-gallon capacity (slightly larger for the hybrid) puts the price modestly above the Civic. Honda dealers charge $180 to $260 with genuine Type 2 blue PHOAT.

What coolant does the Honda CR-V use?

+

All CR-Vs 2007 and newer use Honda Type 2 blue PHOAT (Phosphate-Organic Acid Technology). Compatible aftermarket options include Zerex Asian Vehicle Blue, Prestone Asian Vehicles Blue, and Peak Asian Vehicle Blue. The hybrid CR-V uses Type 2 for the engine plus a separate specialized inverter coolant.

Does the AWD CR-V need different service?

+

The AWD system on the CR-V has its own rear differential fluid service. The cooling system flush is the same regardless of FWD or AWD. Some AWD CR-Vs have a slightly different lower-radiator shield that takes an extra few minutes to remove for petcock access.

How often should the CR-V coolant be flushed?

+

120,000 miles or 10 years for the first flush per Honda's factory recommendation. Subsequent flushes at 60,000 miles or 5 years. The maintenance minder may prompt earlier service based on actual driving conditions.

Is the CR-V Hybrid coolant flush more expensive?

+

Slightly. The hybrid's combined engine plus inverter cooling system means a shop typically quotes $150 to $220 versus $120 to $180 for the standard 1.5L turbo CR-V. Most of the upcharge covers the technician familiarity with the inverter circuit and the air-bleed procedure.

Can I do the CR-V coolant flush myself?

+

Yes for the standard 1.5L turbo. The procedure is essentially identical to a Civic with about half a gallon more coolant. The hybrid is more complex due to the inverter circuit and is best left to the dealer or a hybrid specialist.

What is the highest-mileage CR-V interval?

+

For CR-Vs past 150k miles on original coolant, flush soon regardless of the calendar interval. The PHOAT inhibitor package is designed for 120k-150k miles of duty. Continuing past that risks accelerated corrosion of the aluminum cooling components.
